What is the difference between a Watch and a Warning?

A watch is issued when there is a better than average chance that foul weather of one sort or

another may invade our area during a certain time frame. Indications for this may be a sudden

change in barometric pressure, wind direction or other event.

A warning is issued when the foul weather in question has begun happening. This might be the spotting of a tornado,

severe hail, etc that is happening in one area and headed for another.

A warning, therefore, is far more important than a watch, but this certainly does not mean that one should ignore a watch.

Watches often turn into warnings!

The Wonder Lake Fire Protection Dist. currently has two Storm Warning devices located at each station (one on each side of the lake).

Both sirens are capable of being remotely activated by the McHenry County Sheriff Dispatch center or by members in the station.

Our dispatch center recieves ALL weather alerts from the National Weather Service.

In the event of severe weather, that warants the need to activate the warning device, this can be done with little delay.

If you hear a weather siren, seek imediate shelter!
